September 22nd marks National Hobbit Day! After all, Gandalf said it best: ‘Hobbits really are amazing creatures, so what better way to show appreciation to these heroic characters than to recognize a day dedicated to them. Hobbits came into their own in the cinematic trilogy adaptation ‘The Hobbit’. The films were based on the 1937 novel ‘The Hobbit’ by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Our collection of ‘The Hobbit’ weaponry is official replicas of the weapons used in the movies for you to buy. Amongst our outstanding collection, we have a few favourites that we think stand out from the rest.
Orcrist Sword Of Thorin Oakenshield
Orcrist or the Goblin-cleaver was an Elven sword from Gondolin. The counterpart of Glamdring became the sword of Thorin II Oakenshield during The Quest of Erebor. Made by the Elven swordsmiths, it is widely speculated that King Turgon or one of the Lords of the Gondolindrim was the wielder of Orcrist.
While it is an Elvish sword, it does not glow when Thorin is in the presence of Orcs in the film. This reflects the fact that Glamdring did not glow in the films as well. In The Hobbit films, Orcrist appears more similar in shape to Sting. The grip is made of a large tooth capped in a metal pommel. Orcrist in the movie was well-suited to a dwarf; one may presume that a stout dwarf could wield it with the force needed to cut through nearly any Orc-made armour.
Sting Sword
Sting is an Eleven crafted dagger made in Gondolin. Bilbo Baggins gave Sting its name after discovering the weapon in a troll-hoard during the Quest of Erebor. Sting was later passed down to his heir Frodo Baggins. Though a dagger by Elven terms, Sting made a perfect short-sword for a Hobbit, like Bilbo and Frodo. Sting is described in the books as vaguely leaf-shaped, with a spiral design and gently curving edges. Despite both Glamdring and Orcrist being elvish blades of similar make, Sting is the only blade shown to glow blue in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings films.
Sword of Thranduil
Thranduil’s sword is again an Elven-crafted sword wielded by Thranduil himself during the Dwarven Quest to reclaim Lonely Mountain from the dragon, Smaug. The sword itself was never described by J.R.R Tolkien in his novels and so the movie replica as a result of imagining Elven artistry. The sword bears a long grip and a curved hilt with carved Elvish runes along the straight blade. Thranduil was used to execute the Orc solider Narzug and many others during the Desolation of Smaug and the Battle of the Five Armies.
